Sculpture has long bridged the sacred and conceptual in the Indian subcontinent, with the Shilpa Shastras, ancient texts predating the Vedas, defining its form and materiality alongside architecture. Sculpting Air explores both the presence and absence of sculpture, inviting viewers to engage with form beyond the physical. In this expanded realm, thought itself becomes material, challenging traditional definitions.
Sabiha Dohadwala’s textile interventions draw from this lineage, reimagining the solidity of Mughal jalis in a soft textile form. Installed in exhibition spaces like suspended thresholds, they prompt the viewer to reconsider notions of enclosure and transparency, offering a renewed understanding of space within space.
